Indian Young Scientist Academy (INSA) Medal for Dr Sanjay Pratihar

Indian Young Scientist Academy (INSA) has selected Sanjay Pratihar to award the INSA Medal for the year 2017. The     award consists of a Bronze Medal and carries a cash prize of Rs 25,000/-, is presented annually to honour the young Indian scientist for their contribution in the fields of science and technology. Sanjay Pratihar is a PhD in Organometallic Chemistry from IIT Kharagpur. His contribution to multi-metal complexes, theoretical understanding and sensing of Hq2+ ions in application in the field of agriculture has enabled him to be selected for this award. He had also received the DST- INSPIRE Faculty award in 2012. 

Telugu Filmmaker K Viswanath Wins Dada Sahab Phalke Award 2016

Kasinadhuni Vishwanath, renowned Telugu filmmaker and actor, has won the prestigious Dada Sahab Phalke Award for the year 2016. Born in 1930 in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, K Vishwanath has made numerous films on themes pertaining to classical art, music and dance. Dada Sahab Phalke award was established in the year 1969 to commemorate the birth centenary of Dada Sahab Phalke who is regarded as the father of Indian Cinema. The award consists of a Golden Lotus (Swarn Kamal), a Shawl and a cash prize of Rs 10 lac. It is conferred by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (Govt of India) for outstanding contribution to growth & development of Indian cinema. Names of most of the movies filmed by K Vishwanath begin with the letter “S”. He also has many Hindi movies to his credit.

Prafulla Samantra Wins Goldman Environmental Prize

Prafulla Samantra, a social activist who fought a 12 year long court battle for the land owning rights of the Dongria Kondh tribals of Niyamgiri Hills region of Odisha; is one of the six winners of the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize (also known as the Green Nobel). The Goldman Prize was instituted in the 1990 to honour environmentalists who work at the grassroots level. Samantra is the sixth Indian to be honoured with the prize after Medha Patkar, MC Mehta, Rasheeda Bi, Champaran Shukla & Ramesh Aggarwal. Due to Samantra’s efforts, Anil Aggarwal led Vedanta Limited was forced to suspend Bauxite mining from the Niyamgiri Hills region.
